You wouldn’t discriminate someone for being left-handed

Abaigeal Smyth, an autistic woman from Ireland, is smiling at the camera

Abaigeal is a 28-year-old woman from Ireland, who only last year was diagnosed with autism and ADHD. Although she had good grades in high-level classes in school, she almost dropped out because she was seen as being “difficult”—for asking clarifying questions. Luckily, she had two teachers who supported her and answered her questions, even if that meant taking time out of their lunch break.

She finished her education and now has a professional career. She has encountered discrimination there as well, for example from colleagues asking her to “just not be different”.

"Just because someone is academically achieving doesn't equate to how easy they're finding life."
Abaigeal
