Everyone has the same rights

Deirdre
Deirde Ni Chongaile, mother of an autistic child

Deirdre Ní Chonghaile is a teacher and teacher-trainer in Ireland. Her son is autistic and was assigned to a special classroom for autistic children in his primary school. She expected that he would be taught the same curriculum as all the other children—just in a quieter, autism-friendly environment. But that was not the case.

Deirdre found the quality of the teaching in this special room severely lacking and had to advocate for her son to receive the same level of education as their non-autistic daughter. In the video above, she explains some of the accommodations that should be provided when teaching autistic children.

"I never thought I would have to ask for education for my son—in a school in Ireland!"
