Accessibility is not just ramps or rules

Claudia Maia, the mother of an autistic man, looks at the camera

Cláudia is the mother of Afonso, an autistic, non-speaking young man. In this video she talks about his unique way of communicating, and about her frustration with people who think that because he doesn’t speak, he doesn’t understand.

For Cláudia, making the world more accessible is about more than ramps or rules — it’s changing people hearts and minds, so that they can truly see Afonso, not just his disability.

Cláudia says she and her son find understanding and community at APPDA Lisboa.

"Afonso is not invisible — and neither am I."
